Former Manchester United and England footballer Jesse Lingard told a court a woman accusing his grandfather of sexual abuse ‘just popped up out of nowhere'. The 32-year-old winger said he received a phone call from the complainant making accusations about his grandfather Kenneth Lingard while he was on holiday with a friend in Dubai in November 2022. It came after a documentary was broadcast by Channel 4 that month about the footballer's upbringing and career, featuring family members including his grandfather. Appearing in the witness box this morning, Mr Lingard said: ‘To be honest, it was kind of random.' He claimed the accusations arose out of ‘jealousy' of his family. He told jurors: ‘The jealousy came in. The family, what we've accomplished. I wouldn't have done that without my granddad and my mum as well. She's (the accuser) not part of that.' Mr Lingard - who currently plays for FC Seoul, South Korea, and had flown back to Britain to give evidence in his grandfather's defence - said the woman was angry after seeing the TV show. Mr Lingard said: ‘She was going on about the documentary, saying how can you let him (Kenneth Lingard) be part of that when you know what he's done to me. I said I don't know anything about it'. Jesse Lingard, who gave evidence in his grandfather's defence, scores for Man Utd in 2021 Kenneth Lingard arrives at court in Liverpool In the documentary, the star told how his grandfather played football with him, trained him from the age of five and took him to his first Manchester United game. Mr Lingard described his grandfather as having been 'very passionate, very competitive' and said: 'If it wasn't for him pushing me, I don't think I would be here.' The defendant featured in the film and when asked at the end if he thought his grandson would get so far in the game, he replied: 'I always had it in my mind. There was no doubt whatsoever that he would make it.' Mr Lingard, who signed for Manchester United as a nine-year-old and played for the Red Devils until the 2021/22 season, making 232 first team appearances and scoring 35 goals, told the trial at Liverpool Crown Court he agreed with the woman's suggestion she should ‘go to the police'. Kenneth Lingard, 86, denies 17 offences of historical indecent assault which allegedly took place when the complainant was aged between five and 19. Mr Lingard - who was driven in and out of the court building for his 45-minute appearance - said that if he was aware his grandfather was an abuser, he would have ‘cut ties'. He added his mother Kirsty would not have let him live with Kenneth Lingard and his wife Pam as a child. The footballer, who stood throughout his brief appearance in the witness box, wearing a black suit, white shirt and black tie, added he was unaware Kenneth Lingard had the nickname ‘granddad perv'. Despite everything they'd done for me, I would have cut ties.' The footballer, who made 32 appearances for his country, scoring six goals, said he was brought up by Kenneth and Pam Lingard at their home in Warrington, Cheshire, from when he was aged ‘two or three' after his mother suffered mental health issues. After signing for United as a schoolboy, he went to live in Manchester in the week and returned to Warrington at weekends. Of his grandfather, Mr Lingard said: ‘He basically taught me football, taught me all my skills, drove me up and down the motorways to watch me play football from Liverpool to Manchester, Crewe, Barnsley, Stoke. He's the man who got me here today.' Defence barrister Tom Rice KC asked him: ‘Would you protect your granddad Ken come what may, would you lie to protect him from these allegations?' Mr Lingard replied: ‘No. If I'd have known these allegations, my family would have cut ties, especially (for) my daughter. I'd have never gone down there.' The trial continues.
